Perrelet’s Mesmerizing Turbine XL Double Rotor Lifts off Without Leaving The Ground
Perrelet has recently released an XL version of its Turbine model. This extra large (50MM) piece is fascinating to wear with its unique turbine rotor movement. In fact the watch boasts two rotors, with the top one sculpted to duplicate the look of an airplane turbine engine. Each movement of the wrist puts the turbine in motion, and it is fascinating to watch. The movement is especially enhanced with a colored dial beneath it, but the watch is also available in black on black or limited edition rose gold and black.
Watchmaking and aviation have enjoyed a long history together. Watchmakers have created many useful complications including GMT functions to aide pilots in navigation. On Boeing’s 777 jet, the two Rolls Royce jet engines provide up to 70,000 pounds of thrust. This Perrellet, however, gives the wearer only a suggestion of a jet engine’s power, perhaps just enough to get through a dull business meeting or an extra five minutes on the treadmill.
Tickling The Ivories with Audemars Piguet’s Quincy Jones Millinery Watch
With its signature Millinary dial engraved to resemble piano keys, Audemars Piguet has created a limited edition watch in honor of the great musician Quincy Jones. The watch, a series of 500, celebrates the work of one of music’s legends. Mr. Jones started out as a trumpet player and jazz musician, and his influence on the music scene has included producing Michael Jackson’s Thriller album, and the We Are The World song in 1985. Quincy Jones developed the Quincy Jones Foundation, which works to promote dignity, health and well-being in children. In partnership with Audemars Piguet, Project Q was developed to raise awareness of the importance of self-expression and well-being in children. Each year a Project Q prize is awarded to an individual or group who have been instrumental in helping children reach their full potential.
But the watch is not just another pretty face. It features the calibre 3120 automatic movement fully manufactured by Audemars with a power reserve of 60 hours. The case is made of blackened steel, which further highlights the piano key dial. The back is engraved with Mr. Jones’ signature. This watch is a prime example of artistic and mechanical excellence coming together to support a great cause. Its unique design also makes it a favorite among collectors.
Breguet’s New Reine de Naples Sonnerie au Passage Ladies Watch - 200th Anniversary Edition
Breguet has created yet another amazing complication for its Reine de Naples Watch. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the year that the Queen of Naples, Caroline Murat, commissioned Breguet to create the first wrist-worn watch.
This is the first time that Breguet has added a grand complication to the Reine de Naples watch - it strikes on every hour with a set of three double “sonneries.” This differs from a minute repeater in that it strikes automatically and only every hour (the striker can be turned off). The beautiful movement in all its glory is displayed from the back - it is an oval shape to fit the shape of the watch, and features a richly carved rendering of a dove in flight. The hammers that strike the hourly chime are visible through two apertures on the dial at 11 and 1 o’clock.
Caroline was Napoleon Bonaparte’s younger sister and one of eight children. Her husband Joachim ruled Naples from 1808 to 1816, when he was tried for an attempt at the French throne and executed. Caroline was known to be highly intelligent and ambitious. She commissioned the first wrist watch made by Breguet and also was an afficionado of barometers and thermometers.
Watch Specifics: Automatic movement, with a 65 hour power reserve when the strike is off and 50 hours when the strike is on.
